COLLECTIVE ENCOUNTERS - Theatre for social change

Last week, we had the incredible opportunity to collaborate with Collective Encounters, a pioneering theatre company known for their innovative approach to addressing social issues through performance. Together, we brought to life their latest production, "AUNTIE," a powerful exploration of women's rights inspired by BBC archives from the 1960s.

As part of the team handling AV and projection mapping for the performance, I was deeply immersed in the themes woven throughout the play. "AUNTIE" delved into the significant disparities and societal norms that characterized the era, juxtaposing them with contemporary perspectives on gender equality. Focal Studios provided the play with projections of the archival footage. lighting and sound sequencing and live stream for viewers at home.

One of the most poignant aspects of the play was its examination of the gender pay gap and the strikes during the 60’s that forced change for women, a pervasive issue that continues to haunt workplaces today. Through the lens of historical context, the audience was confronted with the harsh reality of unequal compensation based on gender, sparking crucial conversations about the ongoing fight for equal pay and the persistent struggle for recognition of women's capabilities in performing the same jobs as men, often demonstrating equal or superior competence.

"AUNTIE" fearlessly tackled the topic of reproductive rights, particularly the arrival of the contraceptive pill in the 1960s. The play shed light on the profound impact this medical advancement had on women's autonomy and their ability to control their reproductive destinies. It also highlighted the stark contrast in societal attitudes towards women who chose to have children outside of traditional marital structures, underscoring the disproportionate burden placed on women in matters of family and child-rearing.

The play didn't shy away from the complexities of women's roles in the workplace either. Through compelling and comedic narratives and interactive performances, Collective Encounters' actors delved into the ingrained biases that relegated women to certain types of jobs, perpetuating the notion of separate spheres for men and women. This exploration resonated deeply with audiences, prompting reflections on the enduring struggle for gender inclusivity in various professions. The play ignited conversations about the ongoing fight for gender equity, urging audiences to confront and dismantle the barriers that still impede progress.

The performance took place on International Women's Day, offering an opportunity for introspection on the struggles faced by previous generations while also inspiring a forward-looking stance of empowerment and dedication to continuing the fight for progress. As a member of the team that helped bring this powerful production to life, I'm proud to have contributed to an impactful piece of theatre that not only entertains but also inspires change.

"AUNTIE" stands as a testament to the transformative power of storytelling in addressing pressing societal issues. Something that all of us at Focal Studios are proud to be a part of, continuing to amplify the voices of those advocating for equality and justice in all aspects of society.

Thank you for reading!
